Dominique – Emergency Contact

Dominique woke up and stared at the ceiling of her apartment. She had returned home last night and collapsed into bed, barely taking the time to strip out of her dress and wipe off her makeup. She was still wearing her bra and underwear. With a groan, she flailed around and managed to unsnap her bra, flinging it out of the bed. Her arm collapsed back down and landed on her breast. With a sigh, she ran her fingers over her nipple, remembering the way Max had caressed it, the way his tongue had brought it to attention. The way his hands had curved over her body. She slid her hands down to her thighs. Would he have been gentle as he pushed her skirt up, sliding it with torturously slow hands? Or would he have yanked it hard, ruining the fabric, but leaving her gasping in excitement? She moved her hands inward, imagining how it would feel if they were Max’s hands. She arched under the pressure of her fingers, pushing where she had wanted him to touch her.

Her alarm went off with a jangle of music and Dominique jerked in surprise, rolled over and glared at her phone. Then she realized that it was her leave-the-house alarm. She should have been out of bed an hour ago. Groaning, she dismissed the alarm and sat up. This morning was going to suck so hard.

Once at work, Dominique sat at her desk with her head in one hand and tried to concentrate on the pile of papers in front of her. Her train had been late, and she’d had to run the last few blocks to skate through the door at only ten minutes late. And of course, Sandra, the CFO’s Assistant, had spotted her. Sandra hated her with a passion. Dominique suspected that it was because Sandra had somehow figured out that Dominique was a Deveraux.

Dominique had downed ibuprofen before leaving her apartment, but it had clearly not been enough. Her head throbbed, and worse, no matter how many times she checked her phone, Max still hadn’t called.

When she left the condo the night before, she had been absolutely certain that things were fine between them. But in the cold light of a rainy October morning and the dull pounding of a hangover, she was far less certain. Max had said that he wanted her, but that things weren’t simple. In the rankings of vague non-statement statements, that was up at least in the top ten.

She tried, again, to read the sponsor agreement in front of her. It seemed like gibberish. She wondered if she could sneak away somewhere over lunch and get a nap. Probably not.

Her cell phone rang and she checked the number. It was a hospital. She felt her heart rate pick up.

“Hello?”

“Hi, this Good Samaritan Hospital. We’re looking for Dominique Deveraux.”

“This is she.”

It was a sign of how stressed she was that she fell back on her grandmother’s grammatically correct phone response.

“You’re the emergency contact for Evan Deveraux.
